A high-concept visual effects and compositing project for a Football Night in America feature story. The segment explored the unconventional on-field creativity of Patrick Mahomes, using a cinematic theater environment as a metaphor for his performance. The objective was to seamlessly blend historical NFL game footage into a physical, high-end theater setting. The challenge lay in the technical execution of the compositing—ensuring the “on-screen” game footage felt like an organic part of the theater environment, with accurate lighting, perspective, and integrated reflections, all within the standard rapid-turnaround window of a weekly NFL broadcast.

On the right track
Advanced Tracking & Compositing: I performed precise 3D camera tracking on the theater plates to ensure the screen-replacement footage remained rock-solid. I then composited the NFL highlights into the scene, applying realistic grain, lens distortion, and depth-of-field to match the source cinematography.
Lighting Integration: I generated synthetic light wraps and reflections on the theater’s physical surfaces (like the stage floor and seating) to simulate the glow of the “film” playing back, creating a cohesive visual bond between the two disparate sources.
Broadcast Efficiency: Despite the technical complexity of the tracking and 3D integration, the project was delivered on an accelerated timeline, typical of show-specific graphics that are built and aired within the same week.
Highlight reel
The final segment provided a sophisticated, narrative-driven look at Mahomes’ gameplay. The high-end VFX execution elevated the storytelling, moving beyond a standard highlight reel to create a “feature-film” atmosphere that resonated with the Sunday Night Football audience.
