As the first season of a major new IP. Rock the Block, HGTV’s ultimate renovation showdown, features four of the network’s top designers competing to transform identical, cookie-cutter houses on a single block into custom masterpieces in just four weeks. This campaign set the visual high-water mark for the franchise, emphasizing the proximity of the competition and the escalating tension of the “all-star” battle.

Distressed signal
Inspired by classic silk-screened posters and dirty rock aesthetics, the typography features heavy grit, “halftone” patterns, and weathered edges. This prevented the text from feeling like a flat overlay, giving it a tactile, “on-site” quality.
Spray Paint Dynamics: A key component of the motion design was the use of spray paint physics. We utilized custom-animated paint drips and “overspray” effects to reveal key information. This added a layer of urgency and a “work-in-progress” energy that matched the four-week renovation timeline.
Bold Block Work: The type was set in heavy, tall sans-serif fonts—reminiscent of the “WAKE UP” and “GIVE ‘EM HELL” styles—to stand out against the busy backgrounds of construction materials and sweeping Colorado vistas.
Absolute Cinema "bot"
A defining feature of this campaign was the use of Cinebot camera technology. Based on my leadership, we utilized a high-speed motion control rig to capture the talent in perfectly repeatable, synchronized movements. This allowed us to create seamless transitions and “impossible” camera paths that unified the four different houses into a single, cohesive visual story.
Battle mode activated
The objective was to move away from the “polite” design typically associated with home renovation. By leaning into this “Dirty Rock” aesthetic, we successfully signaled to the audience that this wasn’t just another home show—it was a battle.
Visual Direction
I served as the Lead Creative Director and Motion Designer, overseeing the visual strategy from initial pitch to final delivery.
Agency Collaboration: This project was a successful collaboration with A/V Squad, where I led the creative direction to ensure the brand identity remained consistent across every promo and digital asset.
Multi-Disciplinary Execution: I managed the integration of live-action Cinebot footage with complex 2D and 3D motion graphics, ensuring the technical data-viz elements (budget trackers, timelines) felt integrated into the physical environment of the set.
Rocking out
The Rock the Block launch campaign successfully established one of HGTV’s most popular and enduring franchises. By introducing the Cinebot workflow, we delivered a “slick,” tech-forward look that differentiated the show from traditional renovation programming. The campaign successfully balanced the scale of the construction with the intimate, high-stakes drama of the competition.
