A high-fidelity interstitial animation developed for the historic 150th running of the Kentucky Derby on NBC Sports. This piece was designed to serve as a visual bridge between the modern race and its deep historical legacy, utilizing real-time rendering technology to create a cinematic, “living history” atmosphere.
This project was built and animated within Unreal Engine. Leveraging a real-time workflow allowed for instant feedback on lighting and camera placement, enabling me to push the atmospheric quality and volumetric light rays to a level that mimics high-end film production.
Environment Building: I constructed a virtual 3D “gallery” to house the historical footage. I focused on the fine details—the texture of the frames, the way light hits the “dust” in the air, and the subtle reflections on the surfaces—to ground the archival elements in a believable reality.
Broadcast Integration: Despite the complex 3D environment, the piece was designed to fit seamlessly into the broader NBC Sports “Derby 150” graphics package, ensuring brand consistency while providing a unique, high-fidelity break in the action.
