NBC Sports Sunday Night Football

Graphics Package

2024

A custom broadcast graphics package developed for a special Football Night in America segment on NBC. The creative centered on a gamified “memory test” featuring Rams Head Coach Sean McVay, challenging his renowned photographic memory of NFL play-calling and game situations.

Origin story

The primary hurdle was an extremely compressed production window, a standard reality for NFL broadcast cycles where show-specific graphics must be built fresh each week of the season. I had only a few days to conceptualize and execute a comprehensive suite of elements that could transform a standard interview into an engaging, fast-paced game show experience.

It's in the game

  • The visual direction was inspired by the classic board game Guess Who, fused with a “classic game show” aesthetic as directed by the production team.
  •
  • Comprehensive Toolkit: Engineered a robust set of deliverables including a full-screen title animation, custom lower thirds, and a versatile split-screen layout.

  • Technical Integration: Developed a specialized “video window” system that allowed producers to frame game footage alongside McVay’s reactions, ensuring the “clues” and his “answers” were visually connected for the viewer.

  • Brand Synergy: While the design leaned into a cartoon-inspired look, I maintained the high-production finish expected of the Football Night in America brand, ensuring the segment felt integrated into the broader broadcast.

Total recall

The package successfully elevated the “Memory Game” segment, making it one of the most memorable and shareable moments of the season. By moving away from traditional sports aesthetics and toward a nostalgic game-show theme, the graphics provided the perfect visual vehicle for McVay’s incredible recall.
